PRE-CONCEPTION CARE

Many people have asked me what I believe to be the most important element of Pre-Conception Care. In answering this I have looked at many life situations and what brings us to them. What I believe to be the truest answer to this question is to nourish and care for your own body, for that of your partner and for the precious relationship that you have. This union is destined to bring forth a new life and to invite a soul to return to be your child.

Metaphysically I believe that in nourishing each other, you have a far greater possibility of a healthy conception success. This will also support all the endeavours of parenting. For it is from a strong and caring union, that encourages communication, nurturance, tolerance, patience and acceptance that we discover the essential basis for personal growth and responsibility towards any other human being. Be that ourselves, our partners or our children.

Most of us are spiritually ordained to share the responsibility of growing a child, a new life, with another person. In deepening our understanding of this union and in caring for all its idiosyncrasies, weaknesses and strengths we are guaranteed a good chance of success.
Intimate time spent alone together in sharing your thoughts and feelings and in relating to the journey that you are about to embark upon, is invaluable. Discussion of our fears, hopes, desires and dreams all work towards building energy that is conducive to the act of physical procreation, the conception of your new baby!

Nourishing each other in true communication of needs, wants and desires are almost more important than the supports (that I will be discussing a little further down the track) that we can use to prepare ourselves for physical conception.

This is the time to allow and invite yourself and your partner into true intimacy and exposure of who you are and what you believe in. Each pre-pregnancy, pregnancy, birth and infant is different. In spiritually preparing yourself before the actually physical conception, you are affirming to life, in its deepest state, that you are truly ready to become a Mum or Dad (again)!

Many couples plan this time to spend away from their normal routine and include meditations, massaging each other, writing notes and stories, couple yoga, bathing, playing, dancing and making love. Opening their hearts to new possibilities and to learning more deeply about each other.

In the physical care of your pre pregnant body many positive and important issues arise. I have spoken to peoples from different cultures all over the world, about what they believe is the deciding factor in conception. I have some wonderful stories of how (in the Solomon’s) if a man wears a leaf from a certain bush, and if this leaf is woven in a special way, then the woman of his heart will find him irresistible and conceive the strongest warrior of the tribe! Other cultures (Nepal) believe that the day of conception brings about a male or female child and that you are assured your choice by careful planning of your lovemaking! Others (German) believe that the health of the fetus is directly related to the virility of the man and that if your man has worn his boots all day in the fields…that your baby will be healthy and strong. Hence the old saying ladies, of “getting a man’s boots under your bed!”

I love these stories as it speaks to me of the desire of our species to procreate and of the love of all people of babies and of the act that creates them!

However, physical well being of the woman and the man in the 3 months prior to conception is undoubtedly paramount. In this I am particularly interested in hormonal balance and nutritional status.

On deciding to start a family, many couples believe that they will conceive immediately. This occurs if there is adequate sperm count and viability for the man, and harmonious hormonal balance for the woman. Maintaining fetal growth and development is also intrinsically linked to the woman’s hormonal state. If you are out of balance, if you have been on the oral contractive pill or if your man’s fertility is compromised, your chances of immediate conception are reduced, and temporary infertility may occur. It is always advisable to get your hormonal balance assessed and to have your man’s sperm count checked.

Bearing in mind that the average time for conception (even in the healthiest condition) is 12 months, you really do have time to relax and enjoy yourselves before becoming concerned.
In the 3 months prior to your desired conception it is recommended that you carefully monitor your diet, your stress levels, your ovulation and your overall well being. Keeping fit and supple are all bonuses in producing a healthy ovum. As your body is about to embark upon the 24 hour job that is needed to grow your baby, an appropriate supplement regime, suited to your body type and health history is strongly recommended. For example, if you are a blond, blue-eyed Anglo Celtic woman you will definitely need a calcium and sodium supplement

Embarking on an individualized program of Herbal and Homeopathic hormonal balancing, cleansing and building will go a long way to a healthy happy pregnancy, serene lactation and long term vitally as you age.

For the long-term planners of parenting I highly recommend that you both take a de-toxification program under the guidance of a trained practitioner. This will really strengthen your body and balance your hormones maximizing fertility.

For those couples experiencing long-term fertility issues there are some excellent estrogenic or progestogenic herbs (depending on the individual woman’s hormone balance) that can be prescribed to rectify this health issue. Optimal fertility can be restored with good success as long as there are no medical problems. Each couple is different and it is always advisable to seek the assistance of a fully qualified Natural Health Care Practitioner.

Finally I would like to commend any couple for the steps taken with your health prior to conception. Every positive health decision you make will be guaranteed to support your baby, your bodies and your long term overall health, happiness and well-being.

BREAST CARE - A NATURAL ALTERNATIVE
By Annie O’Moon-Browning

This article is a journey into the health if our reproductive system, what we can do about hormonal imbalance and the issue of this as the major contributing factor to the scourge of Breast Cancer that afflicts 1 in 12 Australian women today in the western world.

This article was birthed after I saw a program on voluntary mastectomy and its hideous outcomes on the mental emotional and physical well being of its recipients.

It is practical and informative look into why as women we should look after our breasts, why we can have problems with our breast, the causes of those problems and what we can do about it.

WHAT IS A BREAST?

• A THING OF BEAUTY
•An organ
•A channel for energy
•A nurturer of babies
• An object of desire

OUR MAGNIFICENT AND BEAUTIFUL BREASTS:

I believe the breasts are truly one of the greatest marvels of nature.

Not only do they bestow on us our femininity and womanliness but they also are intriguing, tantalizing, fascinating, seductive, nurturing and alluring.

They come in all shapes and sizes and are not only an expression of our beauty as women but also of our sensuality, sexuality, fertility and nurturance. Breasts feed and sustain new life.

No other organ apart from the uterus experience changes so dramatic in size, shape and function as the breast does during puberty, pregnancy and lactation.

1] THE BREAST:
Up until 15 years ago breasts were cut off the cadavers in the Student wet labs in the Medical training hospital. Luckily, Today the breasts are left intact on the cadavers for medical student study.

Prior to this date BREASTS were considered “non-functional;” and that they stood n the way of medical explanation of the anatomy of the human body.

Any woman will know that her breasts represent more to her than procreation and suckling of young.

I consider the breast to be an organ with a function not a disposable commodity even on a woman’s body that is no longer alive.

WHAT CAN GO WRONG WITH OUR BREASTS?

Menstruation issues = lumpy, swollen, painful, tender, full, fluidic
Pregnancy and lactation = blocked ducts, mastitis, infection, inflammation, growth.
Menopause = Pain, swelling, loss of tone & breast cancer!
Breast Cancer affects 1 in 12 Australian women.
Many are young and would never have imagined that they wild be candidates for the disease.
10% of Australian women diagnosed with breast cancer are under 40 years.

WHAT CAUSES CHANGES IN A WOMAN’S BREASTS
Hormones mainly!

Also stress and certain food substances.

Inadequate care of the breasts at crucial times in a woman’s life can cause long term damage and the slow development of health problems.

Crucial times are, puberty, pregnancy, lactation, menopause and menstruation.

If the breasts are not cared for properly at these times changes can begin to occur that may be eventually life threatening.

2] HORMONAL DISRUPTION:

Hormone disruptors have invaded the highly sensitive endocrine system all animal life here on planet earth.

They come in many forms e.g. chemical exposure in the environment; hormone-laden meats and dairy products; chemical lacing foods and household product.

In the entire history of human civilization there has never been such dangerous levels of chemicals in our foods, environment and in our bodies.

Exposure to toxic chemicals that possess unintended hormonal actions has resulted in anatomic, physiologic, reproductive, carcinogenic and behavioral abnormalities to all forms of life on this planet.

Toxic chemicals have been undeniably proven to contribute to the escalating issue of cancer in our communities.

CANCER CULPRITS:

These come in many forms.

Toxic influences in the environment and homes, synthetic hormones, pharmaceutical drugs, dietary indiscretions, immune dysfunction, nutritional deficiencies and cultural misperceptions all play their role in this insidious problem.

XENO-ESTROGENS:

Xeno-estrogens are chemical hormone mimics that gain entrance to the bodies of humans and animals alike.

The delicate hormonal system of a woman’s body is vulnerable to these and to their disruption and alteration of the natural balance of hormones in the body.

There are many of these man-made chemicals that mimic estrogen.
E.G. Estrogen blockers, androgen blockers, progesterone blockers. These all adversely affect the delicate female hormonal system and the health of the breasts.

Estrogenic chemicals also alter the hormonal nature of all animal life
E.G. Estrogenic compounds found in effluent in sewerage have been directly attributed as the cause of gender bending or sex change in fish exposed to this effluent.

The studies into this phenomenon discovered that the sewerage taken from this source was heavily contaminated with estrogens.

The source of these estrogens was shown to be synthetic hormones from the urine from women taking HRT and Oral contraceptives.
I.E. Millions of women on HRT and taking oral contraceptives were unwittingly causing this contamination.

Other alarming statistics show that there are worldwide reports of declining fertility in males and reduces ratio of male babies due to the over-estrogenising of the species.

SYNTHETIC CHEMICAL

Synthetic chemical compounds are notorious for accumulating in fatty tissue.

These chemicals bio-accumulate up the food chain and can be passed through the placenta into the unborn fetus accumulating in the breast milk.

IF they are not eliminated from the lymphatic system of the breasts they can collect in the ducts of the breasts causing potential sites for cancerous lumps to grow.

These chemicals are unable to be flushed through the body and accumulate in the fatty tissue and in breast milk reaching very high concentrations.

TRANS FATS:

Trans fats are formed when oil is hydrogenated. Hydrogenating allows the fat/oil to stay solid at room temperature.

Trans fat is essentially ‘shortening’ or ‘margarine’.

It’s why your piecrust is so flaky and why Ritz biscuits stay crisp!

The American Institute of Medicine has warned that no level of trans fat is safe to consume.

Trans fat has been shown to cause heart disease, cancer and insulin resistance.
It is almost impossible to remove trans fats from all products especially those that have been manufactured.

To find food products that whether a product have trans fats in them, look for cold/expeller pressed oils, poly or monosaturated oils, olive coconut, palm or grape seed oil. These will not have any trans fats in them.

Foods that have many trans fats include,

Fast food, commercially baked foods, chips and crackers, spreads sauces and mixes.

Also in unexpected places like some breakfast cereals and energy bars, tortillas, fish sticks
Microwave popcorn, frozen foods and pizzas.

OTHER HORMONE MIMICKERS!

Detergent metabolites are members of a class of chemicals called ALKYL

PHENOL ETHOXYLATES (APEs).

APE’s mimic the hormone estrogen.

APE’s have caused estrogen sensitive breast cancer cells to proliferate in test tubes.

3] THE ESTROGEN CONNECTION:

There is a direct connection between estrogen and breast cancer.

In 1940 around the time that pharmaceutical estrogenic chemicals were first appearing on the market, in the USA a woman’s lifetime risk of breast cancer was 1 in 20. Now it is 1 in 8

Estrogen is a powerful hormone that has many vital functions in the body including the initiation and promotion of cell growth.

When the body is out of balance it can take on a more sinister behaviour.

A body that is continuously exposed to high amounts of estrogen, either during critical times in our development or from prolonged exposure to outside sources, is sowing the seeds of potential breast cancer.

Over-exposure to estrogens can occur due to the following reasons.

The use of oral contraceptives, HRT, xeno-estrogens. These lengthen the amount of time the woman is exposed to additional estrogen but also increases the total amount of estrogen that circulates in the blood stream.

The ingredients of the PILL and HRT estrogens and synthetic progesterone have been listed as known human carcinogens.

ESTROGEN DOMINANCE – ESTROGEN OUT OF CONTROL:

Balance of hormones is always the key to a properly functioning hormonal system.

There is global issue of women experiencing deficient or excessive estrogen level with concurrent progesterone imbalance.

Even women with low estrogen can have estrogen dominant symptoms if she makes low levels of progesterone.

For the last 2 decades research into the issue of Estrogen dominance and progesterone deficiency has shown in female problems such as

SALIVA TESTING:

Saliva is fast becoming the diagnostic choice for measuring hormones circulating around the body.  Since 1983, 2500 papers dealing with salivary diagnostic tests have been published globally.

PRECOCIOUS PUBERTY:

The issues of estrogen dominance do not escape our children

Precocious puberty and the incidence of breast budding in children both male and females is now being recorded as young as 24 months.

The warning that early puberty is a known risk for breast cancer should be the concern of every mother and father.

The concurrent emotional and psychological issues rose of children entering puberty as early as 8 years of age is well documented.

There are many things that parents can do to safe guard their children from entering puberty at too young an age. And of exposing them to hormone disruptors that will cause the early ripening of their hormones.

4] HORMONE IMBALANCE - THE PILL, HRT, AND OTHER HORMONAL DRUGS:

When there are issues of hormonal imbalance the medical solution is to
“Go for the PILL”

With 4 decades of prescribing The Pill and the well-documented evidence of the side effects of the Pill doctors are still inadequate in their warning of woman of the potential and serious problems associated with taking the Pill.

Hormones not only direct and determine physiological processes but also influence emotional and psychological states,

Besides controlling sexual development, function and fertility, hormones control, growth and muscle building, regulate the digestive system, blood sugar levels and blood pressure and fluid balance.

Hormone also holds the key to subjective feelings and changes in blood chemistry associated with stress.

Hormonal problems not only create a myriad of health problems and diseases but also undermine self-esteem, a sense of well-being, emotional balance and mental acuity.

By taking The Pill you are tampering with a woman’s most sensitive physiological and psychological process. By interfering with these processes many profound changes can be initiated in a woman’s body. Some are long term and can result in serious health problems such as breast cancer.

For the best part of 3 decades it has been known that sex hormones cause cancer in hormones dependent tissues like the breast.

TEENAGERS AND THE PILL:

Teenagers are particularly vulnerable to potent artificial steroid drugs contained in the Pill

The breast tissue of a young woman is still developing and is particularly sensitive to over stimulation from synthetic estrogen. In one-landmark study researchers found that women who took the Pill before the age of 20 were diagnosed with breast cancers with a much worse prognosis than women with breast cancer who took the Pill at later age or who had never taken the Pill.

IN 1989 The British Medical Journal reported that women who used the Pill before the age of 25 increased the relative risk of breast cancer by 50% and for women who used it for more that 6 consecutive years raised their risk by 320%

Instead of relying on the Pill to regulate problem periods and associated problems, girls would be much better off to correct the problem at its source.

Improve diet, nutritional supplements, exercise and attending to emotional stresses

POST-PILL INFERTILITY:

Post Pill infertility is a well-recorded medical fact.
Dr Gary Burger in “ The couples Guide to Infertility” reports that Pill users after they come off the Pill nay not ovulate or menstruate due to the disrupting affects of the Pill on the natural rhythmic flow of hormones from the hypothalamus to the pituitary to the ovaries.

The Pill may also cause damage to the glands that produce the kind of cervical mucous that is necessary for fertilization to occur.

NEW SIDE EFFECTS:

The American Journal of Epidemiology recently reported that Pill users have increased risk of inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis, and Crohn’s disease

The American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2002 reported that in a study people suffering liver disease 83% of the women in the study were users of the Pill.

The following are a list of many vitamin and mineral imbalances caused by the Pill.

  • A - levels are increased on the Pill

  • B - deficiencies are recorded.

  • B2 - The bodies requirement are raised.

  • B6 Depletion is mild to severe

  • Folic Acid - Levels are reduced.

  • B12 - Levels are lowered.

  • C - Levels are reduced by 30%.

  • E - The need for vitamin E is increased.

  • K - Levels are higher.

  • Taurine - Reduces levels of amino acids necessary for the healthy function of the thyroid gland.

  • Copper - Absorption is increased.

  • Magnesium - lowers levels,

  • Selenium - Lowers levels.

  • Zinc - Lowers levels significantly.

  • Prostaglandin’s - Lowers levels of certain prostaglandin’s These are normally made from essential fatty acids using zinc as a catalyst and decrease tendencies to clot formation.

  • Blood Lipids - low-density lipids are increased.

5] GENE’S

Genes are the building blocks in life. Life’s blueprint.

In 1994 the discovery of a breast-ovarian cancer susceptibility gene, known as BRCA1 (Breast Cancer-1) led to further research and the discovery of other breast susceptibility genes BRCA2 and BRCA3.

The BRCA1 is present in everyone. When it functions normally it is thought to suppress the growth of cancerous cells in the breast.

However when it is mutated the altered gene allows uncontrolled cell growth, which is breast/ovarian cancer.

This discovery caused many problems including the issue of voluntary prophylactic mastectomy.

The truth of the issue here is that true hereditary breast cancers according to the American Cancer Society are only 5% of all breast cancers.

Much of the beast cancer epidemic is due to the increasing exposure of women to radiation, chemical mimicking estrogens, chemicals and pathogenic factors.

95% of women do not have the breast cancer gene mutation.

There is a lot of controversy over the BRCA1 gene.

The university of UTAH did research into this gene in a Mormon community in southwest UTAH. This group of people had a generational history o breast cancer.
The study was under scrutiny as these people were subjected to the fallout form nuclear testing in the area. A total of 26 above ground tests and 11 underground detonationsb3teenn 1951 and 1980 occurred.

The Mormons were tested for cancer and the existed an increased incidence of cancer in all age groups61% in al age groups.

By 1996, when the blood collection was collected for the gene identification study, 45 years of radiation exposure had passed.

This is plenty of time for radiation exposure to have caused significant gene damage.

From these studies it was impossible to tell if the BRCA1 gene had ever been present prior to the testing.

Did the Utah clan of “One-breasted” women suffer genetic damage form radiation or were there hormone-disrupting chemicals that commented their food, fish ad livestock?

The tests are still under question.
What remains is a fear in women’s heart that if they carry this gene they are automatically up for breast cancer and at this stage this cannot and has not bee substantiated.

First the overwhelming majority of women the blame for breast cancer needs to be placed elsewhere.

6] HORMONE HARMONIZES:

1] Increase Progesterone Levels.

2] Maca.

3] Balancing Blood Sugar.

4] Exercise.

5] Water.

6] Detoxification.

7] Bra’s

8] The Peaceful Heart

1] Increase progesterone levels.
The use of natural progesterone is the safest way to do this. Natural progesterone’s are synthesized in a laboratory form the Wild Yam or Soy. Progestin is different in that it is synthetically produced progesterone like compounds that do not exist in nature. The national Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and the World Health Organization as carcinogenic have listed progestins.

Symptoms of low progesterone levels include,
Fluid retention, low libido, menstrual migraines, sweet cravings, weight gain, swollen and fibrocystic breast. Ovarian cysts, endometriosis, fibroids and polycystic ovarian syndrome.
Progesterone application requires 2-3 months of use before maximum benefit is experienced.

Symptoms in younger women include
Breast tenderness and lumps, severe mood swings, irritability, severe PMS, anxiety.

While using natural progesterone products will alleviate many Hormonal imbalance symptoms other factors such as poor nutrition, improper sleep, lack of exercise, compromised digestion, environments toxins all play their part to exacerbate the problem.

The most popular effective progesterone products are available as creams oils roll-ons.

These can be applied to the face neck chest abdomen and the upper and inner areas of the arms and thighs.

This can be applied from day 12-26 of the cycle. This is when the levels of progesterone area their lowest

Women with longer menstrual cycles than 28 days can find the appropriate day by counting backwards 2 weeks from the expected first day of the period and begin to apply the cream then.

2] Maca.

Dr Viana Muller author of “Maca: hormone regulator for Women and Men – The secret Royal herb of the Inca’s” has written at length of the therapeutic qualities of the herb that grows at 14,000 feet and is the highest cultivated vegetable in the world.

Maca promote the optimal functioning of the hypothalamus and the pituitary thereby improving the functioning of all the endocrine glands.

Maca is effective as it promotes the ovaries and the other glands to produce the needed hormones.

Unlike the other phyto-estrogenic herbs and foods like black cohash and soy isoflavones maca does not itself contain and plant hormones. It simply balances the glands and creates the correct hormonal balance in the body.

Due to its influence on the hormonal system and the fact that chemicals and pesticides disrupt the hormones, Maca that is organically grown is essential rather than that grown under laboratory conditions.

3] Balancing blood sugar.

What we eat directly affects and influences our blood sugar levels.

A high glycemic index food raises blood sugar rapidly and a low glycemic index raises blood sugar slowly. Hormones released in response to the food that we eat control our blood sugar.

High insulin levels will increase estrogen dominance

4] Exercise.

Exercise produces endorphins the body’s natural HIGH mechanism

Exercise decrease the flow of estrogens and narrows the window of vulnerability to breast cancer in young women.

Exercise alleviates moodiness and depression and a 30-minute workout daily brings s much relief as n anti depressant.

5] Water:

Dr Batmanchelidj in “your Body’s Many Cries For Water” states that dehydration through inadequate consumption of water causes the breast to secrete a hormone called prolactin, which at times can cause the breast to form cancerous tissue.

Water also flushes the liver, kidneys and the breast, The biological role of the breast is as a fluid secreting organ IF we are dehydrated the breast is not flushed of its natural waste products.
Inadequate amounts of water can cause a build up of toxins in the body generally lowering vitality and preventing the lymphatic fluids systemically in the body (the breasts are full of lymph nodes, as any woman with PMS will attest to!) from being cleansed.

6] Pure Plant/Herbal Detoxification:

The liver processes a large number and % of female hormones.

IF the liver is congested, sluggish and unhappy it is unable to purify the blood stream.

The hormones will not be processed and the blood will not be detoxified effectively.

Liver and gall bladder de-toxification help enormously with lumpy, painful, fluid filed breasts.

Back to Top of Page

7] Bra’s:

A Swedish study has shown a strong correlation between breast cancer and under wire bra’s and a 29%decrease in breast cancer when women went without this garment or wore bra’s that were not under wired.
Women who went without a bra also showed a lower risk of breast cancer as a group.
Also 90% sufferers with fibrocystic breast improved when they quit wearing bras
Wearing camisoles or tanks tops also considerably reduces the pain with women who have swollen and fluid filled breasts.

8] The Peaceful Heart.

Last but not least.

Stress is one of the greatest enemies to abundant and vibrant health

Fostering inner peace in whatever way you can is one of the hall marks of good breast health and a balanced hormonal system

7] LOOKING AFTER YOUR BREASTS AND SELF BREAST EXAMINATION:

Early detection of breast lumps is vital to the health of the breast and to general overall health.
Breast tissue constantly changes according to the menstrual cycle.

HOW TO DO IT:

1] VISUAL:

Stand in front of them mirror with your breast exposed.
Visually examine your breast and note any changes.
Does one breast look any different to the other?
Note skin and nipple changes or discharge.
Inspect your breast in 4 steps a] Arms at the sides.
b] Arms overhead.
c] Hands on your hips pressing firmly to flex your chest muscles.
d] Bending forward.

2] PHYSICAL:

a] Lying down place a pillow under your right shoulder.
Place your right hand under your head.
Using the first two/three finger pads of your opposite hand begin to palpate your breast.
Start at the nipple and work your way around the breast expanding the circle outwards and including the under arm area.
Use 3 different kinds of strokes. Light medium and firm over each area of the breast. The deeper stoke is done by pressing deeper into towards the rib cage.
B] Standing up (this can be done under the shower) raise your right arm and with soapy or fingers oiled with almond oil check both breasts as you have done lying down.

3] MENTAL:
In a relaxed state allow your mind scan the inside of your breasts. Is there any pain, sensation, anything different or unusual? Mentally explore your breasts for whatever images you can experience, sensations colors, and temperatures. Become totally familiar with your breasts for an inner perspective.

BREAST CARE – THE NATURAL ALTERNATIVE.

Our breasts are full of lymph nodes and tubes that carry white blood cells called lymphocytes.

These clean the breast of waste product, impurities, viruses, infections and cancer cells. The lymphatic system is densely interwoven into the breast tissue.

In breast cancer the lymph nodes are usually those first involved.

Doing gentle lymphatic massage around the breast area is vital to ensure that the breasts are drained on a regular basis.

~ Excellent way to ensure breast health throughout a woman’s life.

~ Self-breast massage allows for the waste product in the lymphatic fluid to be discharged fully.

~ It allows clean and vita blood to flood the area.

~ It stimulates the entire endocrine system via working on the energy meridians of the body. Thus providing the entire system with a charge up!

~ Stimulates balancing our delicate female hormones.

~ PMS, mood swings, menstrual cycle breast tenderness, pain, cysts and fluid retention, menstrual irregularities all will be affected positively by regular breast massage.

~ Keeps us in contact with our breasts. The strokes of the massage allow us to check for lumps accessing early detection.
